IMPLANT DENTISTRY - A TOOTH, A BRIDGE OR DENTURES? YOUR CHOICE. Part 2

One oral health issue, however, can prevent the placement and stability of a dental implant: bone mass. In certain areas, typically upper right and left molars where the roots extend toward the sinuses, an extraction followed by an implant can cause sinus issues. Some Tysons dentists will circumvent the problem by performing a bone graft to enhance the bone mass at the implant site.

But Dr. Gary Ellenbogen offers a more elegant solution: mini implants. While typical implants can be as long as 4.5mm, mini implants can be as short as 1.8mm. The difference, though seemingly small, can make an otherwise dental implant quite possible. “Frankly, I’m surprised that such a helpful iteration of the dental implant isn’t in much broader use by more of my peers,” the Tysons dental expert remarks.

Patients considering dental implants should also be aware of two other important factors: cost and time. While implants typically cost more upfront than bridges or partial dentures, the lifetime cost — including repair and replacement — makes implants the clear winner. “In the past, implants were beyond the budget of most patients,” Ellenbogen continues. “Fortunately, the cost has dropped dramatically over the past few years, opening the door for many more patients to afford what we consider to be the healthiest dental option available.”

As far as time goes, the procedure itself last for approximately 1-3 hours, while the recovery process takes 3-6 months. Patients should be prepared to scale back their lifestyle to a degree in order for the implant to fully assimilate into their own bone.
